Bread is something that I have never made before. Not sure why really, its so easy! And it tastes so much better than shop bought. Plus your house smells amazing whilst its in the oven. I’m definitely going to be making more of it!
Ingredients
500g/1lb 2oz granary bread flour
25g/1oz butter
1 1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp fast action bread yeast
275ml/9fl oz warm water
2tsp sugar to give added flavour and thicker crust (optional)
25g/1oz butter
1 1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp fast action bread yeast
275ml/9fl oz warm water
2tsp sugar to give added flavour and thicker crust (optional)
Method
In a large bowl, mix together the flour (optional sugar) and salt, rub in the butter and stir in the yeast.
Stir in the water and mix into a soft dough by hand.
Knead for about 5 minutes in an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook or turn out onto a floured surface and knead well for 10 minutes by hand.
Shape the dough then place in a greased 2lb tin or on a baking tray.
Cover with a clean, damp tea towel. This stops the dough from drying out.
Leave in a warm place until doubled in size (approx 1 1/2 - 2 hours)
Uncover and bake in a preheated oven at 230 degrees (450F, Gas mark 5) for 30-35 minutes.
(If you would like a golden crust, brush some beaten egg yolk evenly over the bread before baking. For a soft crust, dust with flour before putting into the oven)

Take the loaf out and cool on a rack. The baked bread should sound hollow when tapped underneath.
